Beschreibung: This lecture course is intended to provide a survey of the development of English literature and culture from ca. 1880 to 1920. In Britain this period is characterized by a profound sense of dissatisfaction with traditional values and beliefs. In literature this dissatisfaction is expressed in realist fiction and theatre as well as in the advent of ‘modernism’. This course is intended to provide a survey of key texts of the period and their cultural contexts: the class system, colonialism, psychology. I recommend reading the following texts: Thomas Hardy, Tess of the d’Urbervilles; Joseph Conrad, Lord Jim; E. M. Forster, Howards End; D. H. Lawrence, Sons and Lovers and The Rainbow; Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Earnest; George Bernard Shaw, Mrs. Warren’s Profession and Pygmalion as well as poems by Algernon Swinburne, T. S. Eliot and W. B. Yeats.
