Beschreibung: This lecture course is intended to provide a survey of the development of English literature and culture from ca. 1920 to 1980. In Britain (as in the world) this was a period of transition and crisis. The literature of this period is characterized first (mainly until 1939) by the modernist movement and then, from 1945 onward, by a longing for the past. I recommend reading the following texts:
Virginia Woolf, Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse;
James Joyce, Ulysses;
Malcolm Lowry, Under the Volcano
Evelyn Waugh, Brideshead Revisited;
William Golding, Lord of the Flies;
George Osborne, Look Back in Anger;
Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead.
Registration through StudIP.
