Beschreibung: In linguistics, you get the best of both worlds – theory and empirical research! Linguistics is a highly diverse and interdisciplinary scientific field, often defying categorization because linguists take a plethora of different perspectives and use a wide range of methods to study language.
The same is true for morphology, the study of words. In this seminar, we will approach morphology from theoretical and empirical points of view, thereby learning how diverse a field linguistics really is. We will familiarize ourselves with different theories and their views on heavily contested ideas and open questions in morphology. For example, what is a word? How is morphology related to syntax? We will also learn about experimental research to gain insight into how words are stored and processed in the mind, and apply corpus-based methods that help us quantify and understand morphological productivity.
