Beschreibung: This is the second part of the series of lectures that covers American literary and cultural history from colonial times to today. In this semester, we will look at the function and the status of literary practices – ranging from treatises and pamphlets to fiction and poetry – during the time of the Revolution and the republican era through the early 1800s. Another thematic focus will be the emergence of a national literature and its significance for a newly evolving 'American' self-understanding, especially in relation to the development of the novel, its popular reception and criticism.
