Beschreibung: In Shakespeare's time, innovative ideas about love and death, and about the meaning of life, were often expressed in the form of short poems, esp. sonnets. In this course we are going to look at a wide variety of topics which were discussed in poetry, as well as the stylistic features used.
Please acquire the following two books (copies of which will be made available at zur Heide):
- William Shakespeare, The Complete Sonnets and Poems, ed. Colin Burrow, The Oxford Shakespeare,
- Elizabethan Poetry, ed. Bob Blaisdell, Dover Thrift editions.
Credits will be awarded on the basis of regular attendance, an oral report and a written term paper. Please register for the course in one of my office hours (StudIP registration is not sufficient); anyone registering in person until 24 October 2019 will get a place in the course, irrespective of StudIP.
And please make sure you have read Shakespeare's sonnets and all of the poems in Blaisdell's anthology by the beginning of the semester (there will be a short test on titles/contents).
You do not have to read the longer poems by Shakespeare (but feel free to do so - they are worth it!)
