Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice

DozentIn: Emily Larkin, M.A.

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 22/E26

Zeiten: Do. 08:00 - 10:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife”. The first sentence of Jane Austen‘s masterpiece Pride and Prejudice famously introduces her readership to the core element of the novel. Dreams about love marriages and profitable matches dominate the lives of the Bennet sisters. Austen‘s 1811 classics Sense and Sensibility, similarly, tells the story of two young women trying to find love and stability in a world of rivalry and intrigue.

Marriage, love, fortune and family are some of the key issues Austen discusses in all of her books. This class will focus on two of Austen’s most famous works of literature. In doing so, we will take a closer look at the Bennet and Dashwood family, analyse the central topics of each novel and compare them to one another.

Students taking this class will be asked to hold a short presentation on a topic of their choice regarding one or both of the two novels. A list of prospective themes will be handed out in our first session. If you already have a particular topic in mind, feel free to send me an email or come to one of my office hours.

If you require a Prüfungsnachweis for this class, you will need to write a term paper based on your presentation. Please refer to your specific Studienordnung to make sure you fit the requirements for this course.

The two paperback editions we will work with in class are:

Austen, Jane. Pride and Prejudice. London, Penguin Classics, 2012.ISBN 9780141199078

Austen, Jane. Sense and Sensibility. London, Penguin Classics, 2012.ISBN 9780141199672

Copies of the two books will be made available for you to buy at Buchhandlung zur Heide (Dielingerstraße 42B), however, you may also acquire the two novels elsewhere. If you do so, please make sure to purchase the two editions listed above as it will ease our readings and discussions in class if everyone can refer to the same page numbers. Ideally, most of you will have read the two novels already. In case you have not done so, try to be ready to discuss both books in time for our second session (26 October).
