Beschreibung: This is the second group of the series of lectures concerned with American literary and cultural history from colonial times until today. In this semester, we will look at the function and the status of literary practices – ranging from treatises and pamphlets to fiction and poetry – , during the time of the American revolution and the republican era until the early 1800s. Another focus will be on the emergence of a national literature, and its significance for American cultural self-definition, especially in relation to the development of the novel, its popular reception and criticism.
