Crime and Punishment in American Media [TUE]

DozentIn: Liana Paznikova

Veranstaltungstyp: Seminar

Ort: 41/E07

Zeiten: Di. 14:00 - 16:00 (wöchentlich)

Beschreibung: Representations of crime and punishment are permeating media we consume: films, series, books, podcasts, games. From courtroom dramas to cop shows, from detective stories to true crime podcasts, cultural meanings of justice, punishment, violence, and crime are constantly reproduced and negotiated. What can these texts (fictional and nonfictional) tell us about the culture and society that produced them, and how do audiences engage with discourses on crime and punishment?
This course will take you on a journey surveying the uneven landscape of representational modes of crime and punishment in American media. We will put these popular texts into a wider social and cultural context in order to untangle their complex meanings.
Reading/watching list will be presented in class.
Please note that you will need to engage critically with primary and secondary texts, which includes reading scholarly texts in preparation for our sessions.
Please also note that some of the material watched, read, and discussed in the course deals with different types and degrees of violence. If you feel unable to engage with any particular topic, you can let me know outside of the classroom and we will find a way to work around it.
Please note that this course is NOT available under the ANG-I module, and as part of the examination requirements, you will need to hand in a term paper by February 28th, 2024.
Prerequisites for participation: ANG-B1/ANG-B-LK module
