Beschreibung: What does it mean to be playful? Do playing and gaming always involve a playful attitude or approach on the part of the player? How is playfulness relevant to representational works? This course is designed to address these questions and more, with a focus on the verbal-pictorial storytelling capabilities of comics. We will approach playfulness as an appropriative attitude characterized by a desire or willingness to be free from the restrictions of rules and conventions. Thus, as opposed to the activity of playing, which is often defined in terms of being voluntary, “non-serious,” and absorbing, the attitude of playfulness generally involves “playing with” or transforming established practices. By engaging with several unconventional comics (including so-called game comics), we will reflect on how comics authors may challenge our expectations and sense-making efforts through the use of various self-reflexive techniques. In addition, we will consider the implications of those techniques for the processes surrounding a given work’s production and reception.

Please note that both in-class discussions and preparatory readings for the weekly sessions will be in English. A weekly schedule that includes selected preparatory readings will be established in the first session. The final exam takes the form of a longer essay (a "Hausarbeit").
