Beschreibung:Lecturer: Dr. Debbie Stoll, Smart Communication – Training and Consulting, Osnabrück
has more than twenty years’ experience in teaching business and academic English to students and professionals in South Africa, Belgium and Germany. As language and communication trainer and consultant, her work focuses on the challenges we face in terms of our communication and interaction in multicultural and multilingual academic and professional settings.

Content:
Social encounters in academia take place in hierarchical structures and entail power dynamics. These can be daunting since one´s professional development and progress rely heavily on professional cooperation. Clarity about roles and the nature of professional development processes in academia can take some of the pressure away. In addition to a sound understanding of the social context, developing a healthy sense of autonomy and experiencing self-efficacy can boost the confidence needed in professional communication in academia.

In this workshop, participants will reflect on power dynamics at work in communication situations in academia and empowered ways of dealing with these. Handling criticism with poise, using professional exchange to develop and communicating your growing expertise in a confident way are some of the communication tasks we will delve into. Participants will also get the opportunity to suggest situations for which they would like to be prepared in future. We will analyse these situations, identify effective communication strategies and appropriate language use and practice applying these.
