Introduction of the mammalian immune system and its function in defense against pathogens. Overview of infections diseases and causative agents. Virulence mechanisms of viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens. Detection, therapy, prevention of infectious diseases.

Generation of Wiki entries by students:
- 'Know your friends' – description of cells and functions of human immune system
- 'Know your enemies' – description of microbial pathogens and their infectious diseases

Discussion of original papers on topics of immunity to infection, molecular mechanisms of viral and bacterial pathogenesis
